秋休みもすぎて後半が始まりました。以下のメールが来ていました。
Dear Parents and Students,
For the last several years, ** HS has provided an opportunity to our students that end semester 1 and/or 2 with a grade between 65-69%. The program named “semester extension” afforded these students a chance to earn a 70% (passing score) if they completed additional work over a week or two period using a district supported curricular platform called Edgenuity. Unfortunately, the district has no plans to renew the platform and after thoughtful consideration and input received from the instructional leadership team, we will have to eliminate the semester extension program at our school. While we are researching alternative options for providing additional supports for struggling students, there are no possibilities in the near future for a program similar to semester extension. There continues to be great opportunities for students to recover low grades and turn in missing/late work for a reduced grade to replace a “zero” in the gradebook.
つまり、ギリギリ７０％に足りない生徒をexcuseして、助ける制度が数年前からは
ずっと実施してきたけれども、今年はない。なので、７０切ったら終わりですよ。
という案内です。
アメリカの成績は、テスト、ミニテスト、プロジェクトや宿題でそれぞれ割合が
決まっていて、その点数を割合で足して平均を出すだけです。
いたってシンプルなもので、毎日成績がアップされるので、わりとドキドキです。
SAT（SATとは、アメリカのCollege Boardという教育機関が運営している大学受験のための統一試験です。SATの特徴は、TOEFLや英検など英語力を測る語学試験と違い、学力を測る試験だ）もコロナで大学が採用しなくなったり、学校に来れない、テストを受け
られなかった生徒に関してのexcuseとして、SATを必須としない大学があったり、
ここ数年コロナによる救済措置が多数見受けられたようですが、
そういった言い訳が通じなくなっている気がします。アメリカはとにかく
学年が上がると急に厳しくなります。
この学区は州で10位辺りの高校が集まっているので、学区自体が色々厳しくて、
今回、ハイスクールの長女はESOLにいることもあって、英語は９６％、その他も
８５％以上にはなっているので、今のところ安心ですが。
今後、どういう展開になるか。来年ESOL出てしまったら、それこそ大変じゃないか。
と今から心配してしまいます。
Koreanのコミュニティでは、ESOLに入っているような生徒は、いい大学にいけない
出来損ないのように言われるそうですが、ESOLで成績（credit）取れる方が絶対
いいに決まっています。頑張ってもらいたいものです。
